Tequila 101: Mastery and Mixology

Date: Wednesday, May 3rd
Time: 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Place: Nada
220 West Nationwide Boulevard, Columbus
Cost: $28 for Member, $33 for Non-Member (Includes instruction, presentation, tequila tasting, margarita, light appetizers, tax, and gratuity. Additional beverages on your own.)

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. Our Cinco de Mayo 2017—Ivy Style—celebrates one cultural aspect in particular: libations.

It can be argued that tequila is the best-known spirit originating from Mexico. It is the bedrock to any rollicking margarita. Even still, many are unfamiliar with tequila origins, are unaware of its many types, and unschooled in tequila’s ties to heritage and culture. That’s about to change.

In preparation for Cinco de Mayo 2017, the Dartmouth, Harvard, and HBS Clubs invite all members and guests to Tequila 101: Mastery and Mixology (a course even Don Julio himself would be proud of). We begin with a discussion about tequila, it’s history and its indelible mark on Mexican culture. Alumni are then guided through a tequila tasting—sampling many of the different tequila types. The information gleaned will then be put to the test as alumni try their hands at making the perfect margarita. It is at this point that we thought it wise to roll in a few Mexican inspired appetizers, perfectly paired with… you guessed it, tequila!

Behind the Scenes at Amazon’s Etna Fulfillment Center

Date: Thursday, May 11th
Time: 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Place: Amazon Fulfillment Center
11999 National Road SW, Etna
Cost: $30 for Member, $50 for Non-Member (Includes admission, presentation, food, non-alcoholic beverages, and tour.)

Amazon has engineered an incredibly nimble infrastructure for the transfer of things, a logistics platform that dramatically amplifies any one person’s ability to move matter to anyone else. The company’s fulfillment centers have the potential to become networked hubs of our consumer economy, the biggest of big boxes that enable businesses to focus on making things rather than moving them. Amazon offers fast, free shipping for customers thanks to a robust network of 149 fulfillment centers around the world.

Amazon's initial fulfillment centers were built in 1997, located in Seattle, WA, and New Castle, DE. The original 93,000 square-foot facilities seem tiny relative to the new fulfillment centers being built today. The Amazon U.S. fulfillment network consists of more than 70 fulfillment centers, and more than 300,000 employees work for the company overall in the U.S. The company has more than 80,000 individual Amazon Robotics drive units deployed and in use at more than 20 Amazon fulfillment centers in the U.S. as well as at three facilities in Europe.

The center in Enta, Ohio, which opened in September 2016, boasts more than 800,000 square feet and processes small sortables with the help of more than 2,500 employees and more than 5000 Amazon Robotics drives. It's sister facility, in Obetz, OH, opened in August of 2016 with more than 1,000,000 square feet of floor space to handle large sortables. The Obetz facility employs more than 650 associates.

Join Dartmouth Club members and guests, along with our friends from Harvard and HBS, for a behind-the-scenes look into Amazon’s vast network of fulfillment centers. In a presentation by Matt Krough, Director of Operations, attendees will learn about the multi-national company, including Amazon’s investment in Ohio, as well as critical information about Amazon’s Etna facility. Mr. Krough will also speak to Amazon’s Leadership Principles and how they apply to daily operations. Following the presentation, alumni and guests will tour the fulfillment center.

6:15pm   Program begins
7:15pm   Tours begin

Columbus Crew SC is an American professional soccer club based in Columbus. Crew SC competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member club of the league's Eastern Conference. Crew SC began play in 1996 as one of the ten charter clubs of the league. The team is owned by Anthony Precourt (Tuck '98) and Precourt Sports Ventures LLC. Precourt became the second owner in the history of the club in 2013.

The Crew currently plays its home games at MAPFRE Stadium, the first soccer-specific stadium ever built for a MLS team, with a seating capacity of 19,968. In 2014, the club's 19th season at MAPFRE Stadium, the Black & Gold set club attendance records for both most cumulative attendance and most sellouts.

The Crew has won five major trophies: MLS Cup 2008, the 2004, 2008, and 2009 Supporters' Shields, and the 2002 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The Black & Gold have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League (or its predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions' Cup) three times, reaching the quarterfinals each time.

Andy Loughnane, President of Business Operations

Loughnane has overseen improvements and milestones in a number of business capacities for Crew SC, beginning with the final execution of the club’s brand transformation and identity reveal in 2014. Within seven months of his appointment, the Black & Gold secured the largest commercial deal in history of club to rename America’s first soccer-specific venue, MAPFRE Stadium, following a monumental deal with the global insurance company. Ahead of the 2016 season, Loughnane again oversaw a major partnership for Crew SC, helping complete the club's landmark television broadcast partnership to reach 100% of all Columbus households, and large portions of all major metros in Ohio via a simulcast arrangement with The CW Columbus, FOX-28, ABC-6, Spectrum Sports, and Buckeye Broadband.
