December 13th was strategically chosen for its historical significance — it’s officially Dartmouth Day! 2017 marks the 248th anniversary of the founding of our beloved "College on the Hill". It was on this day that the Royal Governor of New Hampshire, John Wentworth, conveyed the charter from King George III, thereby establishing our College. What better day to host an alumni gathering?

We'll have delicious food and drinks for all! This event is open to family and friends, but please RSVP early since there is limited space!

Behind the Scenes at BrewDog Brewery & Taproom

Date: Wednesday, January 17th
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Place: BrewDog Brewery & Taproom
96 Gender Road, Canal, Winchester
Cost: $35 for Member, $50 for Non-Member (Includes admission, presentation, VIP Tour, appetizers. Your first brew is on the Dartmouth Club.)

The United States does craft beer like nowhere else. Retail dollar sales of craft brews increased 10% last year, up to $23.5 billion, and now accounts for nearly 22% of the $107.6 billion U.S. beer market. The bedrock of the scene is its legion of epic bars and brewpubs.

Columbus is at the cutting edge of the craft beer craze. So much so, that Scottish craft beer maker BrewDog built its U.S. headquarters and first brewery in Canal Winchester. The 10,000-square-foot taproom and restaurant serves food, BrewDog beers, and some guest brews as well. This is the first piece of a $30 million investment BrewDog is making to enter the U.S. craft beer market. And the company is not stopping there.

Earlier this summer, the company closed its first round of U.S. crowdfunding after raising $7 million. BrewDog is breaking ground on the world’s first crowdfunded craft beer hotel next to its brewery. The state-of-the-art hotel, dubbed The DogHouse, will boast a craft beer spa with beer-based treatments, and a craft beer tap in every room serving the brewery’s flagship beer. If that weren’t enough, there’s even a hot tub filled with the brewer’s award-winning Punk IPA.

Who’s behind this ingenious enterprise? After a sample or two, join Dartmouth Club members and guests for an “insider’s perspective” and presentation about BrewDog’s history, business model, and funding mechanisms by BrewDog CEO, Tanisha Robinson. Following her presentation, attendees will learn about the production facility and capabilities, followed by a behind the scenes brewery tour from BrewDog’s Ohio Market Manager, Mark Frame.

6:30pm      Grand Prize Drawing *
6:35pm      Insider Perspective with CEO Tanisha Robinson

Learn Olympic Curling and Ivy Alumni Happy Hour

Date: Sunday, January 21st
Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Place: Columbus Curling Club
2999 Silver Drive Rear, Columbus
Cost: $30 for Member, $40 for Non-Member

You always wanted to visit East Asia. You also always wanted to win an Olympic medal. Well, a friendly reminder: the next Olympic Winter Games are but a few weeks away. And they’re in Pyeongchang. Thus, it’s time to discuss curling.

Join Dartmouth alumni as we sweep the ice at the Columbus Curling Club, a full-tilt curling facility for trying out your competitive stones-pushed-on-ice legs.

This is your chance to make sense of the odd sport of curling on training grounds used by actual curling and hockey champions. It’s got everything needed, too. (Namely: ice, brooms, big curling stones...and a bar.)

Start by locking up a two-hour session and rounding up some curling associates (note: four people per team). Once there, you’ll learn the basics from a professional instructor on the hand-manicured ice rink, with actual matches to follow.

You’ll want to dress warmly (it’s 40 degrees on the ice), but if you need something to keep the blood flowing, you can just duck inside the bar for a few local beers (Cisco, Jack’s Abby, Mayflower) before getting back on the ice.

After we're hooked on the sport, alumni and guests (and envious onlookers) can stick around for a beer in the warm room. There we can relive our glory days, network, and socialize.

We’re guessing this isn’t how it’ll be in Pyeongchang. Or maybe it will.

Forecasting the Future of the Economy: Insights from Behavioral Economics

Date: Thursday, February 8th
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Place: Ice Miller LLP
Arena District, 250 West Street, Suite 700, Columbus
Cost: $30 for Member, $50 for Non-Member (Includes presentation, light hors d'oeuvres, and refreshments.)

"If you don't know the cause, you won't know the cure," says Dr. Roger Blackwell believing that consumers, in comparison to government or Federal Reserve policies, are more accurate indicators of GDP growth.

The New York Times describes Roger Blackwell PhD as one of America's top speakers on marketing and business. As a marketing expert, Dr Blackwell has served on the board of directors for multiple public and private companies, most prominently Max & Erma's Restaurants, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Worthington Foods. He is, perhaps, best known for his pioneering model of the consumer decision-making process used in the forecasting of macro-economic trends.

Dr. Blackwell taught over 3,000 executive seminars on six continents before retiring from joint appointments in the Fisher College of Business and the College of Medicine at Ohio State, where he received 27 teaching awards while teaching 65,000 students. He was also a Visiting Professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business, the University of Washington, and numerous universities throughout Canada and Africa.

At Ohio State, Blackwell was part of a team that wrote the first textbook in its field, Consumer Behavior, now in its 10th edition, the foundation of what is now called Behavioral Economics.  His 40th and most recent book is Saving America: How Garage Entrepreneurs Grow Small Firms into Large Fortunes. It is series of conversations based on lessons learned from entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, and Sam Walton. It also includes Columbus entrepreneurs Dave Thomas, Lisa Ingram, Cheryl Krueger, Les Wexner, and Peter Kight.

Join Dartmouth, Yale, and HBS Club members and guests for an evening and candid conversation with Roger Blackwell as he discusses the forecasting of macro-economic trends by understanding consumer demographics and behavior, and demonstrating why increased productivity is the key to growth and profitability for both B2C (business to consumer) and B2B (business to business) firms.

Gene Smith: Managing the Buckeyes Athletic Department

Place: The OSU Fawcett Center, Alumni Room
2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus
Cost: $30 for Member, $50 for Non-Member (Includes presentation, breakfast, and beverages.)

Gene Smith is in his 14th year as Director of Athletics at The Ohio State University. He is widely recognized and lauded among the leaders of his profession, and Smith has been named "one of the most powerful people in collegiate sport".

Smith oversees the nation's most comprehensive, and one of the most successful collegiate athletic programs in the world. By way of example, a recent Wall Street Journal article ranked OSU football as the most valuable college football program in the country, coming in at just over $1.5 billion. This is up an impressive 59% over last year's #1 ranking.

But there's more to his success than just football. The athletics department manages 36 fully-funded varsity sports with more than 1,000 student-athletes. Under Smith's leadership graduation rates increased to 75% (from 65% in previous years), funding to other university programs has reached $39 million (fiscal 2015-16), and a Forbes article recognized the OSU athletics department as one of the 10 best organizations to work for in sports.

8:00am   Program
8:45am   Q&A
9:00am   Conclusion

Please join us for a very interesting breakfast discussion with Gene Smith to discuss big-time college athletics, Buckeye football, and his surprisingly simple secrets for success.
