HBS Club Columbus is proud to host Professor Teresa M. Amabile as part of the HBSCC Faculty Visit and has invited members and guests of the Dartmouth Club of Central Ohio. Teresa Amabile is a Baker Foundation Professor and Director of Research at Harvard Business School. Originally educated and employed as a chemist, Dr. Amabile received her Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University. Her research investigates how life inside organizations can influence people and their performance. Originally focusing on individual creativity, Dr. Amabile's research expanded to encompass individual productivity, team creativity, and organizational innovation. This 35-year program of research on how the work environment can influence creativity and motivation yielded a theory of creativity and innovation; methods for assessing creativity, motivation, and the work environment; and a set of prescriptions for maintaining and stimulating innovation. Dr. Amabile's current research program focuses on the psychology of everyday work life, creativity, and career transitions.

What's the Buzz About Honeybees?

Date: Sunday, August 27th
Time: 2:00pm - 4:30pm
Place: The Ohio Statehouse
1 Capitol Square, Columbus
Cost: $25 for Member, $33 for Non-Member

The humble honeybee might not seem like an essential part of our food chain, but honeybees are critical pollinators. Without bees, fruits like apples, blackberries and cherries can’t grow. Nor can cucumbers, sunflowers or alfalfa. In Ohio, farmers rely on bees to help them produce 70 crops. Nationwide, the agriculture industry relies on honeybees to pollinate $14 billion in crops every year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It’s estimated that bees play a role in the production of one-third of our Nation’s food supply.

But something has been killing bees in recent years. The US bee population has decreased in number by 90% since the 1980s. Beekeepers around the world say their hives have been drastically diminished. Some blame viruses. Others cite predators. Either way, the results may prove catastrophic and have important political implications, too.

Join Dartmouth Club members and guests for an educational and entertaining afternoon learning first-hand about the complex social structures of, environmental and economic interdependence on, and state politics of the honeybee. Alumni and guests will receive a private tour of the official state apiaries atop Ohio’s State House.

Following our apiary tour and presentation, alumni and guests will partake in a special mead tasting, at Columbus’ own Brothers Drake, to learn more about the “spirited” byproducts of the honeybee.

Presenters
Tamara Ansel, Deputy Assistant Director, Ohio State House
Terry Lieberman Smith, State Apiarist, Ohio Department of Agriculture
Nina Bagley, Entrepreneur, Ohio Queen Bee

Columbus Crew SC is an American professional soccer club based in Columbus. Crew SC competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member club of the league's Eastern Conference. Crew SC began play in 1996 as one of the ten charter clubs of the league. The team is owned by Anthony Precourt (Tuck '98) and Precourt Sports Ventures LLC. Precourt became the second owner in the history of the club in 2013.

The Crew currently plays its home games at MAPFRE Stadium, the first soccer-specific stadium ever built for a MLS team, with a seating capacity of 19,968. In 2014, the club's 19th season at MAPFRE Stadium, the Black & Gold set club attendance records for both most cumulative attendance and most sellouts.

The Crew has won five major trophies: MLS Cup 2008, the 2004, 2008, and 2009 Supporters' Shields, and the 2002 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The Black & Gold have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League (or its predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions' Cup) three times, reaching the quarterfinals each time.

Andy Loughnane, President of Business Operations
Andy Loughnane’s sports and entertainment background encompasses leadership roles with three major league sports franchises in sales and management positions prior to joining the Black & Gold. Loughnane has overseen improvements and milestones in a number of business capacities for Crew SC, beginning with the final execution of the club’s brand transformation and identity reveal in 2014. Within seven months of his appointment, the Black & Gold secured the largest commercial deal in history of club to rename America’s first soccer-specific venue, MAPFRE Stadium, following a monumental deal with the global insurance company. Ahead of the 2016 season, Loughnane again oversaw a major partnership for Crew SC, helping complete the club's landmark television broadcast partnership to reach 100% of all Columbus households, and large portions of all major metros in Ohio via a simulcast arrangement with The CW Columbus, FOX-28, ABC-6, Spectrum Sports, and Buckeye Broadband. Time: 1:00am - 4:30pm
Place: Rusty Bucket Restaurant & Tavern
1635 West Lane Avenue, Columbus
Cost: Free for Everyone (Admission is free. Food and Beverages on your own.)

There’s a cool chill in the air. The College hums with activity. This can only mean one thing:  football season is here. And the best of all games is Homecoming. This year marks the 122nd anniversary of Dartmouth Night and the homecoming football game.

Big Green Football
Dartmouth Big Green Football possesses a storied tradition that includes a national championship, and is presently tied with Penn for a record 18 Ivy League Football Championships with eleven College Football Hall of Fame inductees.

The sport of football was played on campus as early as 1876. The first intercollegiate game occurred on 16 November 1881, when Amherst traveled to Dartmouth. The Green won with a score of 1-0. In 1884, Yale visited Dartmouth and routed the Big Green, 113–0. The Elis teams did not return to Hanover until 1971.

Please join fellow alumni, family, and friends for lunch followed by the homecoming game against Yale University. We’ve invited the Yale Club of Central Ohio to share in the fun.
